Some recent projects
Our work is unusually diverse – and incredibly stretching. But what do we actually do? Here are just a few examples to give you an idea of the kind of projects you might be involved in.
Cassini-Huygens
We go on a 1,500 million km journey
A hostile environment, constrained memory space and processing power, and one chance to get it right. Developing mission-critical, totally autonomous software for the probe that would explore Saturn and its moons was hardly a walk in the park.
As well as controlling the probe’s descent to the surface of Titan – the second largest moon in the solar system – the software had to initiate experiments, transmit data, and monitor the relative position and velocity of the orbiting spacecraft. On-board the orbiter, probe support software collected and managed the data, passing it to the Cassini central data system for recording and eventual transmission to Earth. Absolute reliability was crucial.
The Huygens probe sent a flood of data during the atmospheric descent and after the landing. The spacecraft continues to orbit Saturn and relay the data collected by the probe.
Electrabel
A landmark SAP solution
Europe’s largest power company faced growing competition and increased regulatory demands. At the same time it needed to be as responsive and customer-focused as ever. We mobilised an exceptional multinational team of industry experts, IT experts and SAP product consultants to create a New Retail Platform.
Our rigorous approach to delivery encompassed business and best practice process design, configuration, testing and migration. Today the system handles every aspect of the end-to-end business process, from marketing and sales through to customer service, billing and finance, and covers Electrabel’s entire four million customer base in Belgium. That makes it, in terms of customer numbes, the largest integrated SAP CRM, IS-U and Business Warehouse solution in the world.
The Law Society
Providing sound legal advice
We have a history of guiding companies through complex change – just one reason why the Law Society selected us to help it transform itself to meet the needs of solicitors, consumers and employees. By partnering with us in a five-year outsourcing contract, the professional body for solicitors in England and Wales will be able to deliver efficient, cost-effective, modern regulation coupled with responsive support and membership services to solicitors. We’ll also manage the Society’s server and network infrastructure and provide legacy application support. It’s a partnership that builds on our established credentials within the ‘modernising justice’ environment.
Met Office
One of the most complex IT moves in Europe
An executive agency of the UK Ministry of Defence, the Met Office is a world leading provider of advice on the weather and the natural environment. The project to transfer the Met Office's ten sites in Bracknell to new accommodation 150 miles away in Exeter was described as one of the most complex operational IT moves ever attempted in Europe.
By providing a smooth transition from one site to another, we safeguarded the critical element of business continuity for the Met Office, helping to protect the investment it had made in new facilities.
UCAS
Helping a record number of students get places
In the largest IT project ever undertaken at UCAS, we implemented a new core system to process the 500,000 students applying for a place in higher education in UK universities and colleges.
The system we built – which replaced a 25-year old legacy system – gave UCAS the flexibility to incorporate future changes with minimal disruption. It also increased the speed and data accuracy of university applications and reduced the total cost of ownership of the core system.
